INVENTING LANDSCAPE

Please join us for a Guest Lecture by UC Berkeley Faculty, Richard Hindle on February 1st from 12:30-1:30

INVENTING LANDSCAPE:
Patents, prototypes, and the design of complex environmental systems.

This presentation will explore the role of patent innovation in the design of large-scale and environmental systems such as rivers and coasts since the 15th century until today. Although historical in content, the talk will look projectively towards the agency of design in the Anthropocene as we address trans-scalar environmental challenges with complex and distributed geographies. Historical precedents including the urbanization of Venitian Lagoon, and design of the Mississippi River Delta, will be discussed in relation to contemporary challenges of sea level rise and climate change.
