VOLUME: THE SYSTEM

Assistant Professor Neeraj Bhatia along with students Blake Stevenson and Lujac Desautel have published an article on ‘Rewiring Territories’ in Volume Magazine’s issue The System. The article looks at the dissociating technology of oil/ gas pipelines and features work produced by Stevenson and Desautel in Bhatia’s studio ‘Rewiring Territories’. This design-research is part of Bhatia’s research project The Petropolis of Tomorrow, currently being conducted by CCA’s Urban Works Agency.

The editors of Volume Magazine write, “THE EXPLOITATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES HAS DEVELOPED ECONOMIES IN LATIN AMERICA AT THE EXPENSE OF LANDSCAPES, THE CULTURES AND PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN AND DEPEND UPON THEM. NONA, RENEWABLE RESOURCES LIKE OIL POSE A UNIQUE PROBLEM: THEIR INFRASTRUCTURE, SUCH AS PIPELINES, ARE LEFT BEHIND AFTER THE LIQUID STOPS FLOWING THROUGH THEM. CAN THESE INFRASTRUCTURES BE HACKED TO GIVE BACK TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY TAKEN FROM THEM?”
