Unfinished urban visions and partially implemented plans have left a lasting imprint on the city of Berlin we see today. Fragments of larger plans are evident through buildings and open spaces that bear witness to political powers of the past and, today, are characterized by complex overlays of ownership negotiations, stakeholder constellations, and the competing requirements of historical preservation and daily use. This presentation highlights the dynamic and catalytic conditions of reappropriation that have occurred in and around Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport over the past decade, and considers how forced states of limbo might be perfect departure points for leveraging urban resources towards new types of collective spaces.
