Jenny Odell on What’s Left Out: Using Google Maps to Explore Peripheral Landscapes
Friday February 6, 2015
Helzel Boardroom, 6pm
California College of the Arts
1111 Eighth Street
San Francisco, CA
Jenny Odell is a Bay Area native/captive whose work mines imagery from Google Maps and other online environments in order to highlight the material nature of our modern networked existence. Perhaps because she works with collections and taxonomies of imagery, Odell has several times been compared to a natural scientist (specifically, a lepidopterist). Her current work focuses on infrastructural systems that deal with water, waste, energy, and extraction. Her work has made its way into the Google Headquarters, The Center for Photography at Woodstock, the Made in NY Media Center, Les Rencontres D’Arles, Arts Santa Monica, Fotomuseum Antwerpen, the Made in NY Media Center, and East Wing Gallery in Dubai. It’s also turned up in TIME Magazine’s LightBox, The Atlantic, The Economist, WIRED, NPR Picture Show, and Imagine Architecture: Artistic Visions of the Urban Realm (Gestalten, 2014). Odell teaches at Stanford University and the San Francisco Art Institute, and is an upcoming artist in residence at Recology San Francisco.
